C olitis flare up If you have an inflamed bowel, the following considerations should be taken into account. Changes in your diet can play a huge part, both good and bad, and can make life bearable when you know how to calm your gut down during a flare up. Things to Avoid include.. Alcohol Spicy foods Vinegar and pickles Small pips and nuts Fruit skins Artificial sweeteners (very acidic) Caffeine Fatty foods Brown bread Check for food intolerance (dairy is a common one for colitis) Stress, we hold emotions in our bowels. Yoga/meditation, there are loads of meditations on youtube, have a look and find something that feels right for you. Speak to your doctor about other medications you are taking, which might aggravate your gut. Things that can be helpful. Aloe Vera drinks. Find a good quality one, The Forever Living brand is a good one Slippery elm or marshmallow supplements. Again, find a quality one with our additives where possible. Eat regularly, no large portions Cabbage water and chicken soup. Both are very healing. The L L-glutamine in the cabbage water is vital for gut health. Quite often, colitis sufferers have a condition called leaky gut syndrome too, which means they are unable to retain some nutrients in the foods they eat. L Glutamine helps with this. Naturally, there is L-Glutamine in cabbage water. There is more in the water than the cabbage itself. Use this along with chicken broth made with boiled chicken bones. Boil for at least 2 hours. Both together are incredibly healing! Probiotics. There are loads on the market. You are looking for high-strength, multi-strain probiotics. Wheatgrass. Buy online or in some health food stores. Use in smoothy recipes, which is another way to get the best healing for your gut. Yucca, this amazing supplement, is helpful to calm the bowel down. When loose bowels cause you to become uncomfortable, this can have a powerful effect of balancing the bowel and reducing the urgency to go. All of this is helpful advice which can go towards a healthier gut. Reasons why someone has inflammation can vary, and you should discuss with your GP.
